InView President and CTO, Lenore McMackin, talks about the design behind the company’s latest innovation, a multi-spectral camera that images at 4 wavebands spanning visible to shortwave infrared at the same XGA resolution as its classic InView210.  Her talk will cover the special features of the Texas Instruments DLP that provide easy access to a range of wavelengths and will show InView’s latest hardware developments.

Having already harnessed the computational power of the famous Single-Pixel Cameraarchitecture of the InView210 SWIR imager, InView has now enhanced its speed and image processing capability by incorporating a small array of pixels and new compressive computational methods.  InView takes advantage of parallel measurements, matrix processing and efficient reconstruction algorithms to produce the highest resolution SWIR images at rates of just a few seconds per frame. As shown below, multi-pixel Compressive Sensing magnifies the resolution of a small pixel array. On the left, is a low-resolution  image directly measured from a 64 x 64 InGaAs pixel array.  When that same 64 x 64 array is used with compressive sensing, the image is transformed computationally into a detailed 512 x 512 image.

InView has been awarded a Phase II STTR grant from the US Air Force to develop a video rate compressive camera from its patented multi-pixel architecture.  Having already harnessed the computational power of the famous Single-Pixel-Camera design, InView has now enhanced its speed and image processing capability by incorporating a small array of pixels and new compressive computational methods.  InView takes advantage of parallel measurements, matrix processing and fast efficient global reconstruction algorithms to produce the highest resolution SWIR images at rates up to 5 FPS.

InView will present the design of an imaging spectrometer built using the architecture of the single-pixel camera at Photonics West, February 17, 2016 in San Francisco, CA. The architecture is enabled by the novel sampling theory of compressive sensing implemented optically using the Texas Instruments DLP™ micromirror array, which also provides unique diffractive spectral features that result in a multi-spectral, high-spatial resolution imager design. The new camera design not only provides multi-spectral imagery in a wavelength range that extends from the visible to the shortwave infrared, but provides multiple spectral bands without reduction in spatial resolution.

CS techniques can improve digital pathology workflows.  Whole Slide Images, which are very high resolution digitized versions of patient tissue samples, can be many gigabytes in size.  This enormous size combined with the fact that the great majority of the data has no important information for pathology creates a huge waste of time for the pathologist and an opportunity for CS.  Using global detection and classification techniques in the compressed domain, CS algorithms developed by InView can perform a faster first look at the entire WSI, highlighting important features for closer inspection by the pathologist.

Ten patents were issued to InView Technology Corporation in 2014 covering the implementation and improvement of its Compressive Sensing camera architecture and algorithms.  With its initial product, the InView210™, InView has developed the world’s first SWIR camera based on the computational imaging architecture of compressive sensing.  InView continues to enhance its IP portfolio of 12 issued patents and 10 additional patent applications surrounding the implementation of its unique imaging modality, whose mathematical foundations were developed only within the last decade.  The foundational patent on the single-pixel camera architecture was issued in 2012 to Rice University and, along with other related patents, is exclusively licensed by InView.
